Layered Grounds, 2026
Layered Grounds continues Wilce’s interest in the overlooked and the edges of the everyday. Loosely rendered sketches of native flora gathered from the Wellington waterfront are repeatedly overlaid, creating a field where scale, perspective, and placement gently resist alignment. Within this shifting composition sits an architectural fragment from the boundary of Te Papa—an ambiguous threshold that gestures toward the complexities of guardianship, access, and the differing cultural understandings of whenua. The limited palette of overlapping greens, blues, and greys reinforces a sense of quiet noticing, inviting viewers to slow down and move through the work at their own pace.
