In modern society, labour and time are the ultimate producers of value. Humans are form makers and have a desire to do a job well. For a worker to create something that stands on its own, separate to us, is akin to saying “I made this. I exist”. So, given most artists want to produce something of financial or cultural value, I wondered: can there be art without work?

The emotional tension and ambiguity between the material surface and ordinary objects stimulated a lexicon on the politics of life and labour. The unanticipated blackness of my bare feet and colour in my cheeks also left little doubt that work had been done.
